  Single-process colour: one formula taken from the roots through the ends in a single step, so the result is even across the whole head. Different from a root touch-up, which colours only the regrowth.

  CHI’s own smoothing treatment, in the keratin-smoothing family. A protein formula is worked into the hair and set with heat, laying the cuticle down so the hair reads smoother and less frizzy. It is not a relaxer and does not permanently restructure the curl.

  Balayage lightens the lengths by hand and leaves the root alone. Adding a base means colouring the root area as well, either to cover regrowth or to set a deliberately deeper shadow root for the lightened lengths to melt out of.

  A freehand highlighting technique, from the French for sweeping. Lightener is painted straight onto the hair rather than wrapped in foils, and is usually weighted toward the mid-lengths and ends, so there is no hard line where it starts and the regrowth stays soft.

  Colour without ultraviolet light. Dihydroxyacetone, a simple sugar, is applied to the skin and reacts with the outermost layer of dead cells to form a brown pigment. It develops over several hours and fades as those cells shed.

  A lash lift. The lashes the client already has are reshaped so they curl up from the base, rather than fibres being added to them.

  A perm for the eyebrows. A solution breaks the bonds inside each hair, the hairs are combed into position, and a second solution reforms the bonds so they hold that direction. It changes how the brow sits, not its colour and not how many hairs there are.

  Warm wax is spread over the hair outside the shape being kept, given a moment to grip, and pulled away against the direction of growth so the hairs come out at the root. It takes many hairs at once, which is what makes a clean edge.

  A haircut done with clippers, with scissors, or with both. Graduated clipper lengths are what make a taper or a fade; scissor-over-comb grades the same way without them.

  Four ways of attaching extensions. Tape-in sandwiches a thin section of hair between two adhesive wefts. Fusion bonds individual strands with keratin softened by heat. A sew-in is stitched onto braided tracks. I-tips are threaded through a small metal ring and clamped, with no heat and no glue.
